Fur die Edition wurde in 58 Archiven und Bibliotheken die Uberlieferung von mehr als 70 Reichstagsteilnehmern erfasst. Deren Dokumentation verdeutlicht die Beweggrunde fur die Bewilligung einer Reichsturkensteuer fur Kaiser Rudolf II. in einer bis dahin unerreichten Hohe trotz der im Zuge der reichspolitischen Polarisierung seit 1586 aufgelaufenen konfessionspolitischen Konflikte. Gegenuber der Steuerfrage und den Forderungen der Konfessionsparteien, die zunachst die Eroffnung des Reichstags infrage stellten und im weiteren Verlauf dessen Sprengung befurchten lie en, traten weitere Themen wie die reichsinternen Belange Landfrieden, Justiz, Wahrung und Steuersystem in den Hintergrund. Die Edition dokumentiert anhand zahlreicher Protokolle, Akten und Berichte neben den Verhandlungen der Reichstagskollegien und der Religionskonvente auch bisher unberucksichtigte Debatten auf informeller Ebene. Sie bietet damit neue Einblicke in die Problematik des Reichstags 1594 und dessen Verortung in der Destabilisierungsphase des Reichs am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts.
