顾志兴1937年生于浙江杭州。浙江省社会科学院研究员，曾任浙江省地方志办公室副主任、浙江省古籍保护工作专家委员会委员、浙江省作家协会会员。主要研究方向为浙江文化、地方文献。著有《浙江藏书史》《浙江出史》《文澜阁四库全书史》等。
《天下印书杭为上》是“杭州传统文化丛书”的一种，主要写杭州刻书故事。印刷术是中国的四大发明之一，是中国人对世界文明发展作出的杰出贡献之一。杭州是印刷术的故乡，早在唐末五代，吴越王三次刻印《陀罗尼经》开杭州印刷史之端。至宋朝，印刷业已成为一种重要产业，杭州成为国子监定印的城市，重要经史典籍皆下杭州刊印，时人有言“今天下印书，以杭州为上”就是对杭州刻书的评价。在此基础上，昇又在杭州发明了活板印刷术，意义重大。“一叶宋版一两金”，就是后世书业界对以杭州为代表的宋版书的总体评价。元代杭州印书，所刻《农桑辑要》达万部之数，创造了单本刻书的记录，为。明代杭州为全国四大书市之一，刻书业发达，且有创新。洪楩所刻的《六十家小说》(《清平山堂话本》)保存宋元话本之面貌，对明代话本小说发展起到重要作用，又大量刻印戏曲和小说，配以精美插图，使之进入千家万户。清末浙江书局所刻之书，质量特高，对解其时“书荒”起到重要作用。
