陶渊明、杜甫、李商隐这三位诗人，遭际不同，个性有别，诗风各异。本书将三人并举，分析了他们各自在诗歌中对于形象和手法的使用。内省型的陶渊明在诗中使用概念化的形象，外观型的杜甫在诗中使用现实中实有的形象而有所突破，李商隐则以想象中的非理性形象映照幽微的内心世界。这种差异不仅折射出了诗人个体的生命与心灵，也在一定程度上展现了中国古典诗歌的发展轨迹。本书平实亲切，通俗易懂，是一本轻松的大众普及读物。

叶嘉莹，号迦陵，1924年生于北京书香世家，1945年毕业于辅仁大学国文系，著名古典文学专家，博士生导师，南开大学中华古典文化***所长。自言“书生报国成何计，难忘诗骚李杜魂”，数十年来致力于中国古典诗词的教学、研究和推广工作，桃李满门，著作等身。曾在哈佛大学、北京大学等多所世界知名高校任教讲学，享誉海内外。2018年和2019年，叶嘉莹先后向南开大学捐献财产三千余万元，建立“迦陵**”支持中国古典文化研究。2018年，叶嘉莹入选“感动中国”年度候选人。2019年，叶嘉莹荣获中国政府友谊奖和首届南开大学教育教学奖终身成就奖。
